A Contemporary Workplace

Kolkata, West Bengal

Project Narrative

The renovation explores how workplace design can foster efficiency, interaction, and a sense of cultural belonging. The intervention establishes a contemporary work environment informed by the spatial and material memory of Bengal, without relying on literal expressions of regional identity.

Conceptualised under the theme “Roots,” the interior draws from a restrained palette of muted tones, tactile textures, natural fabrics, brick, and stone. Familiar materials and sensorial qualities are reinterpreted through a contemporary architectural language, introducing warmth and cultural familiarity while retaining an atmosphere of refinement. The workplace becomes an environment for both focused work and creative exchange.

The spatial strategy is shaped through precise interventions that improve movement, visual connectivity, daylight, and natural ventilation. Workspaces are organised across varying degrees of privacy and interaction, incorporating adaptable workstations, collaborative zones, co-working areas, and meeting spaces. The reception functions as a spatial threshold, mediating between public and private circulation while maintaining continuity across the interior.

Meeting spaces are conceived as flexible settings capable of accommodating formal discussions, informal exchanges, and collaborative work. The canteen assumes a more social and restorative character, with clerestory openings bringing daylight deep into the interior and strengthening its connection with the surrounding environment.

Materiality becomes a primary instrument for establishing a sense of place. Brick jaalis, stone surfaces, textured finishes, natural fabrics, and carefully crafted joinery translate familiar elements of Bengal’s architectural vocabulary into a contemporary workplace language. Rather than serving as decoration, these materials shape the interior through light, shadow, tactility, texture, and proportion.

ROOTS is conceived not simply as an office renovation, but as an exploration of place and identity within the contemporary workplace—where cultural memory, material expression, environmental responsiveness, and evolving patterns of work converge to create an environment that is efficient, collaborative, and quietly rooted in its context.
